TAKE THE LEAD DOG TRAINING CLUB

Northwood, Stoke-on-Trent

Titbits

Yummy, scrummy treats are essential. Boring gravy bones, begging strips, choc drops, pieces of kibble or toast will not motivate your dog. We suggest something like smelly cheese, cut up into small cubes, roast chicken or steak left-overs, liver, sausage or something similar. You can also buy home cooked liver-cake from the Club.

Titbit bag

A small bum-bag is very useful for putting your titbits in. It is important that you do not have to spend time fiddling in a pocket or plastic bag. Alternatively, a small, sealable (but easily opened) pot is useful.

Poo Bags

It will be your responsibility to clean up after your dog. We cannot use the litter bins in the Hall to dispose of solid waste, therefore you must take this home with you. We have mops and buckets to clean up liquid waste. Please do NOT leave bags on the grass outside the Hall.

Clothing

For the ladies, please do not wear fancy clothing, such as skirts, as these can be a distraction to a dog when it is working. Trousers are much better, as you will be required (on some exercises) to kneel on the floor (the Hall is carpeted). Flat shoes are essential. High heels, flip-flops and Dr.Scholls sandals are a no-no, as they can be dangerous.

Collars

Your dog should wear a good quality collar for everyday use, with an identity tag attached (this is a legal requirement). It does not matter if your dog is micro-chipped or tattooed. The law states an identity tag with your name and address (telephone number if you wish). We do not condone the use of choke chains. Head collars, such as the Gentle Controller are useful alternatives.

Leads

A good quality lead (leather is best) of a reasonable length is preferable. A pet shop will try and sell you a 6 foot training lead if you tell them you are going to dog training classes. This is not necessary. A lead of 3 foot is adequate both for training and walking your dog. Retractable/extendable leads have their uses in parks and fields, but not for walking or training your dog. Chain leads are only as strong as their weakest link and hurt your hands.
